Ringfort (Rath), Glenbane East, Co. Limerick

There is something quietly instructive about a monument that is recorded, mapped, classified, and then found to be simply gone.

In the scrubland of Glenbane East, a ringfort once stood that now leaves no physical trace whatsoever, not even the suggestion of a raised bank or a hollow where a ditch might have been. It is, in the most literal sense, an absence dressed up in the language of presence.

A ringfort, sometimes called a rath, is one of the most common early medieval monument types in Ireland, typically a circular area enclosed by an earthen bank and external ditch, used as a farmstead sometime between roughly 500 and 1000 AD. Thousands survive across the country in varying states of preservation. This one in Glenbane East was recorded on the 1923 Ordnance Survey six-inch map as a circular enclosure approximately twenty metres in diameter, a modest but perfectly typical example of the form. By the time Denis Power compiled his inspection notes, uploaded in August 2011, the monument had been levelled entirely. The surrounding ground is poorly drained scrubland, the kind of wet, marginal terrain that often preserves earthworks simply because it resists the plough. Here, though, that protection was not enough.

For anyone curious enough to visit, the honest expectation should be set clearly: there is nothing to see on the ground. The interest lies less in what you will find and more in what the record itself tells you, that within living memory a feature visible on a published map was erased so completely that a trained inspector could identify no trace of it. The site sits in scrubby, waterlogged ground, which makes approach uninviting in wetter months. If you do go, the surrounding landscape of south County Limerick is worth the attention, and the exercise of trying to locate a vanished monument using an old map has its own peculiar satisfaction, even when the conclusion is a patch of unremarkable scrub.
