Ringfort (Rath), Gneeve, Co. Mayo

In the townland of Gneeve in County Mayo, a ringfort sits in the landscape, largely unannounced.

Known in Irish as a ráth, a ringfort is an enclosed circular settlement dating typically from the early medieval period, roughly 500 to 1000 AD, built by enclosing a domestic space within one or more earthen banks and ditches. Tens of thousands of them survive across Ireland, yet each one marks a specific family or community that once farmed, kept animals, and organised daily life within those banks. The one at Gneeve is among the quieter examples, its documentation still catching up with its existence.

The source material for this particular site is thin, which is itself a kind of information. It points to how many of these structures remain incompletely recorded, present in the ground and visible, in some cases, from satellite imagery or field survey, but not yet fully described in the written record. Ringforts in Mayo are common enough that individual examples can slip through the gaps for years. The county's landscape, shaped by Atlantic weather, bogland, and the particular rhythms of small-scale pastoral farming, has preserved earthworks that elsewhere were ploughed out or built over, but preservation does not automatically mean documentation.
