Ringforts
In the townland of Gower in County Clare, a ringfort sits in the landscape, its circular earthen bank tracing the outline of a life lived more than a thousand years ago.
Ringforts, known in Irish as raths, were the most common form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically enclosing a single farmstead within a raised earthen ring. Tens of thousands once existed across the country, and though many have been ploughed out or built over, a considerable number survive as low grassy rings, easy to miss unless you know what you are looking for.
