Ringfort (Rath), Graigue Little, Co. Wexford

On a north-facing slope in County Wexford, the outline of an early medieval settlement has been absorbed so thoroughly into the modern landscape that it is barely legible at ground level.

What survives is visible mainly from the air, where the soil itself gives the site away.

Aerial photographs reveal a circular enclosure roughly 40 metres in diameter, its form defined by a wide fosse, a defensive ditch, approximately 5 metres across, and a slighter outer ditch running along the eastern, southern, and western arc. A ringfort, sometimes called a rath, was typically a farmstead enclosed by one or more earthen banks and ditches, home to a single family of some local standing during the early medieval period, broadly the fifth to twelfth centuries. This one, however, has not survived as a standing earthwork in any conventional sense. Much of its perimeter has been incorporated into a field bank and the townland boundary between Graigue Little and its neighbour, the enclosure quietly repurposed over generations into the administrative and agricultural fabric of the countryside. The phenomenon is common enough across Ireland, where ancient boundaries proved convenient and were simply kept, their original purpose long forgotten by the people who continued to follow them.
