Nobody knows what it is. That quiet uncertainty is, in its own way, more interesting than a confident label would be, and it sits at the heart of a site that has otherwise been slowly dissolving back into the landscape for centuries.

The ringfort, a rath, is a type of enclosed farmstead common across early medieval Ireland, typically consisting of a circular area defined by one or more earthen banks and a surrounding ditch, known as a fosse. This example in Grange measures approximately eighteen metres across and occupies the crest of a ridge running northeast to southwest. It was clearly positioned with some deliberation: the views from the north, east, and south are wide and open, offering good sightlines across the surrounding country. The bank that once enclosed the interior has been badly disturbed over time, broken by several gaps, and the fosse has largely disappeared, surviving only on the northern to southern arc of the circuit. A possible entrance gap of around 1.6 metres wide is visible at the west-southwest. A second ringfort lies just 140 metres to the northeast, which suggests the ridge was considered a particularly worthwhile place to settle, or that the two enclosures represent different phases of occupation in the same general area. The slight depression at the centre of the interior remains unexplained; it could reflect a filled-in feature of some kind, or it could be coincidental ground disturbance. The site itself offers no easy answers.
