Ringfort (Rath), Greenane, Co. Limerick

A low ring of earth in a soggy County Limerick field is easy to walk past without a second glance, yet what looks like a slight rise in the pasture is in fact the surviving outline of an early medieval farmstead, probably well over a thousand years old.

Ringforts, known in Irish as raths when they are built from earth rather than stone, were the most common form of enclosed settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically serving as the defended homestead of a farming family. Thousands survive across the country in varying states of preservation, and this one at Greenane sits quietly among them.

The monument survives as a roughly circular enclosure, measuring approximately 15.4 metres on its northeast to southwest axis and 14.6 metres from northwest to southeast, which makes it relatively modest in diameter. It is defined by an earthen bank, and beyond that bank runs a fosse, the term for the external ditch that would originally have reinforced the enclosure's defensibility. A second, outer earthen bank is also traceable around much of the circuit. The fosse runs from north-northeast to northwest and measures around 4.6 metres in width, while portions of the outer bank remain visible from north-northeast to east, from southeast to southwest, and from west-southwest to northwest. The southern section of the main bank is notably wider and lower than elsewhere, possibly indicating an original entrance or simply a point of greater erosion. The record was compiled by Denis Power and uploaded in June 2013.

The site sits in poorly-drained, gently rolling pasture, and that waterlogged ground is part of what gives the visit its particular character. The interior and the enclosing earthworks have been heavily poached by cattle over time, meaning the ground is churned and uneven underfoot, and the finer detail of the banks is considerably worn. Waterproof boots are sensible in any season. Despite the degradation, the rath still commands good views in all directions from its gentle rise, which is itself a reminder that the choice of location was never accidental; early farmers selected these spots with care, keeping an eye on the surrounding land.
