In the townland of Hollowpark in County Mayo, a rath sits in the landscape, quietly outlasting the farming communities that built it perhaps a thousand or more years ago.
A rath, or ringfort, is a roughly circular enclosure defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, and was the standard form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, used as a defended farmstead for a family and their livestock. Tens of thousands of them survive across the country in varying states of preservation, and yet each one represents a particular patch of ground that someone, at some point, chose to enclose and call home.
