Ringfort (Rath), Johnsfort, Co. Mayo

Beneath improved pasture on a ridge in Johnsfort, Co. Mayo, there was once an Early Medieval ringfort.

There is nothing left to see now, not a bank, not a ditch, not a scatter of stone. The site was destroyed in the 1980s, and the ground has been smoothed over entirely. What makes it worth noting is precisely that absence, and what the maps and the aerial record quietly preserve in its place.

The 1838 Ordnance Survey six-inch map recorded a circular embanked enclosure roughly twenty metres in diameter, already slightly compromised on its western side by a field boundary running northeast to southwest. By the 1930 edition, the enclosure had been absorbed further into the surrounding field system and was shown as a subrectangular shape, its original form already being reshaped by agricultural use. Local knowledge held that the rath, a type of earthen ringfort typically used as a farmstead enclosure in early medieval Ireland, was built from earth rather than stone, and that it contained a souterrain, an underground stone-lined passage often associated with storage or refuge. Both features are now gone. What the ground-level record has lost, aerial photography partially recovers: a circular cropmark is still visible from above, with traces of what may be a fosse, the defensive ditch that typically ran around the outer edge of such enclosures, along the southern arc. Cropmarks form when buried features affect soil moisture and cause overlying grass or crops to grow slightly differently, making ancient outlines legible from altitude even when invisible underfoot. The ridge-top position, described as having very good views, was almost certainly deliberate. Early Medieval settlements in Ireland were often sited to command the surrounding landscape, and this one would have looked out over a wide stretch of Mayo before it was levelled.
