Ringfort (Rath), Keeloges, Co. Leitrim

Most ringforts announced themselves on the landscape with some drama, occupying hilltops or elevated ground where their encircling banks could be seen from a distance.

The rath at Keeloges takes a different approach entirely, sitting quietly on a low rise on the floor of Glenade valley in County Leitrim, its grass and scrub-covered outline blending into the surrounding terrain rather than dominating it. That modesty of position does not diminish the structural logic visible beneath the vegetation.

A rath is an earthen ringfort, the most common type of early medieval farmstead enclosure in Ireland, typically dating from roughly the fifth to the twelfth century and used to protect a household and its livestock. At Keeloges, the enclosure is oval in plan, measuring approximately twenty-five metres north-north-west to south-south-east and twenty-one metres east-north-east to west-south-west internally. It is defined by a round-topped earthen bank, which survives to a reasonable external height of 1.3 metres on the eastern and southern sides before diminishing to a low scarp elsewhere. Between that main bank and a slighter outer bank to the north-east, east, and south-south-west runs a flat-bottomed fosse, the term for the ditch that was typically dug to provide material for building the bank alongside it. The fosse is best preserved on the eastern and southern arc, where its base is still measurable. The entrance, 2.2 metres wide and accessed by a causeway across the fosse, faces south-east, a common orientation for ringfort entrances in Ireland, possibly for reasons of light and shelter.
