What makes it quietly odd is not the rath itself, which is poorly preserved, but what has attached itself to its southern edge: two conjoined rectangular earthen enclosures, snug against the monument, connected to its interior through a gap in the bank. Whether those enclosures belong to the same period of activity or arrived later is, as yet, unresolved.

A rath is an early medieval farmstead enclosure, typically a circular area defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, within which a family would have lived and kept livestock. This example at Kilbeg is subcircular rather than perfectly round, measuring roughly 39 metres north to south and 32.5 metres east to west. The defining bank has been partially obscured along its northern arc, where a later field wall was built directly on top of it, a common fate for earthworks in agricultural landscapes where useful ground and ready-made boundaries get absorbed over generations. The two rectangular enclosures pressed against its southern side are the more puzzling element. The larger of the two, about 21 by 19 metres, can be entered through a 6.3-metre gap in the rath's southern bank, suggesting some deliberate connection between the two structures. A smaller enclosure, roughly 17 by 15 metres, sits immediately to the east of this. Whether they formed part of the original settlement, perhaps as animal pens or garden plots associated with the rath, or whether they represent an entirely different phase of land use, remains an open question.
