Ringfort (Rath), Kilcloghans, Co. Galway

In the gently undulating pastureland of Kilcloghans, in north County Galway, there are two ringforts, and yet there is nothing to see.

The site consists of a conjoined pair of circular enclosures, each roughly thirty metres across, that have left no visible surface trace whatsoever. The ground simply continues, unbroken and unannounced, as though the archaeology had quietly decided to absent itself.

Ringforts, sometimes called raths, are the most common type of monument in the Irish landscape, typically earthen or stone-walled enclosures that served as farmsteads during the early medieval period, roughly 500 to 1000 AD. A conjoined pair like this, two enclosures sharing a boundary or linked together, is a less common arrangement, and may suggest something about the status or function of the original settlement, though no detail beyond the form itself survives for this particular site. What we do know comes largely from the first edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map, produced in Ireland during the 1830s, which recorded the enclosures clearly enough to document their shape and approximate dimensions. Whatever earthworks were visible to those early surveyors have since been levelled, most likely by centuries of agricultural activity, leaving the map as the primary evidence that anything was ever here at all. It is a common enough fate; a great many ringforts across Ireland have been reduced or erased entirely by ploughing and land improvement over the past two centuries.
