Ringfort (Rath), Kilgreana, Co. Mayo

On a south-facing slope near Kilgreana in County Mayo, a subtle rise in the grassland marks what was once an enclosed farmstead, its boundaries now barely legible as a low earthen rim.

The raised area measures roughly 36 metres north to south and 40 metres east to west, with the surviving bank standing only around 0.3 metres high. That near-disappearance is itself telling. Where once there was a purposeful boundary, centuries of weather, agriculture, and gradual subsidence have reduced it to something most walkers would step over without a second thought.

The site is a rath, the most common type of ringfort found across Ireland. Raths were typically circular or oval enclosures defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, built during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, and used primarily as enclosed farmsteads for a single family and their livestock. Thousands survive across the country in varying states of preservation, though many, like this one, exist now only as faint platforms absorbed into working farmland. The Ballinrobe and district area, sitting between Lough Mask and Lough Carra in east Mayo, contains numerous such sites, recorded as part of a local archaeological survey compiled by D. Lavelle in 1994. That the bank here has eroded so significantly suggests the site has been under agricultural pressure for a considerable time, its original profile long since softened by grazing and cultivation.
