Ringfort (Rath), Killeen (Coshma By), Co. Limerick

Some places in the Irish landscape are most interesting for what is no longer there.

In a pasture near Killeen in the Coshma barony of County Limerick, there once stood a rath, a type of circular earthen enclosure built during the early medieval period, typically as a defended farmstead surrounded by one or more raised banks and ditches. Today, nothing of it remains above ground. No earthwork, no ditch line, no raised rim of soil. The field has swallowed it entirely.

The evidence for its existence comes down to a single cartographic moment. The Ordnance Survey's six-inch map of 1840 recorded the site as a large, roughly sub-circular enclosure with a diameter of approximately 45 metres, which would place it at the more substantial end of the rath spectrum. After that first survey, it was not marked on any subsequent edition of the map, suggesting it had already been largely levelled or ploughed out by the time later surveyors passed through. Aerial imagery captured between 2011 and 2013 by Digital Globe, and separate Google Earth imagery, confirmed there is no visible trace of the monument remaining at the surface. The site sits on a gentle south-facing slope to the immediate west of a disused railway line, with moderate views in all directions, which is a fairly typical situation for a rath, whose builders generally favoured elevated ground with good sightlines over the surrounding land. The record was compiled by Fiona Rooney and uploaded to the national monument database in July 2020.

For anyone inclined to visit the general area, the location is most useful as an exercise in reading the landscape against the documentary record rather than as a site to observe. The disused railway line is a useful orientation point, and the ground itself is open pasture. There is nothing to see at the surface, which is precisely the point: the 1840 map becomes the primary artefact here, a reminder that the survey teams of the early nineteenth century were often recording monuments that were already disappearing fast, and that without those six-inch sheets, this particular rath would leave no trace in the record at all.
