Ringfort (Rath), Killerguile, Co. Waterford

On the lower eastern slope of Croughaun Hill in County Waterford, a roughly circular patch of grass holds its shape against the hillside with the quiet persistence of something that has simply refused to disappear. It is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, and while thousands of these early medieval enclosures survive across Ireland, this one retains enough of its layered defences to give a clear sense of how such places were originally constructed and why.

A rath was typically a farmstead enclosed by one or more earthen banks, serving as a residence for a farming family of some status during the early medieval period, roughly the fifth to twelfth centuries. The Killerguile example is subcircular in plan, measuring approximately 35 metres east to west and 30 metres north to south. Its main earthen bank, between 4.5 and 5.5 metres wide, survives along the northern, eastern, and south-western arc, though it has been removed in other sections, probably through agricultural clearance at some point in the past. The bank stands more prominently on the eastern side, where the external height reaches 1.5 metres, than on the west, where it drops to just 0.2 metres. Beyond the main bank, an outer fosse or berm, between 5 and 7 metres wide, and a further external bank survive particularly well to the south and south-west, the outer bank reaching 1.3 metres in height on both its inner and outer faces. The entrance, 2.2 metres wide, opens to the south-east, an orientation that is reasonably common among Irish ringforts and likely reflects both practical and social considerations around access and visibility. The interior, however, has been worn and disturbed by grazing cattle over time, leaving the ground surface eroded.
