Ringforts
In the townland of Killulla in County Clare, a rath sits in the landscape doing what raths have done for over a thousand years: enduring.
A rath, or ringfort, is a roughly circular enclosure defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, built during the early medieval period, broadly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, and used as a defended farmstead for a single family or small community. Ireland has tens of thousands of them, and yet each one occupies a specific patch of ground, chosen by specific people, for reasons that were entirely practical at the time and are now almost entirely lost to us. The one at Killulla is among the quieter entries in the national record, its details not yet publicly documented in any detail, which gives it a particular kind of anonymity.
