Raths, or ringforts, are among the most common archaeological monuments in Ireland, with tens of thousands recorded across the country, yet each one marks the site of a farmstead from the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. An enclosing bank and ditch, sometimes doubled or tripled in wealthier examples, defined the boundary of a family's world: their home, their animals, their small claim on the land.
