Measuring roughly 40 metres along its longer axis and 25 metres across, the enclosure sits on a low ridge running north-north-east to south-south-west, the kind of modest elevation that would once have offered its inhabitants a useful view of the surrounding land without advertising itself dramatically to anyone passing through.

This is a rath, a type of ringfort constructed from earth rather than stone, and one of thousands scattered across the Irish countryside. Most were built during the early medieval period, broadly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, and served as enclosed farmsteads for a single family or small community. The earthen bank, sometimes accompanied by a ditch, defined a domestic and agricultural space rather than a military one, though the enclosure would have offered a degree of protection for livestock. At Kilmoraun, the bank survives as a low but discernible feature in pasture, clear enough to be picked out in aerial imagery taken in May 2019 and again in February 2021, when lower vegetation and different light conditions can make such earthworks easier to read from above.

Sites like this one are easy to overlook at ground level, particularly in summer when grass growth softens the profile of the bank. Aerial or satellite views tend to reveal them more clearly, and the contrast between the interior and exterior ground surface sometimes sharpens in early spring or after dry spells, when differential moisture retention in disturbed soils shows up as subtle changes in vegetation colour.
