Ringfort (Rath), Kilnamack, Co. Waterford

Somewhere beneath the canopy of a coniferous plantation near Kilnamack, a ringfort sits quietly at the top of a north-facing slope, its earthen banks still holding their shape after more than a thousand years. Ringforts, known in Irish as raths, were the enclosed farmsteads of early medieval Ireland, typically occupied between roughly 500 and 1000 AD, and thousands of them survive across the country in varying states of preservation. This one is easy to overlook, tucked into forestry that has grown up around and over it, yet the ground still tells a clear story if you know what to read.

The enclosure is nearly circular, measuring 28.5 metres east to west and 26.5 metres north to south. It is defined by an earthen bank between 3.5 and 4.5 metres wide, which rises more modestly on the downslope northern side, where the interior height reaches only about 30 centimetres, and more substantially on the southern side, where the interior height climbs to around a metre. Beyond the bank lies an outer fosse, a defensive ditch roughly a metre wide at its base and 70 centimetres deep. More telling still is the evidence of a second line of enclosure that has since largely flattened out. An external berm, a flat ledge of ground between 7 and 10 metres wide, is defined by a scarp running roughly west-northwest to east-northeast, indicating the site was originally bivallate, meaning it once had two concentric enclosing banks rather than one. Two-ringed raths are generally associated with higher social status in early medieval Ireland, suggesting whoever lived here occupied a position of some local importance. The original entrance, 2.1 metres wide with a causeway 2.4 metres across, faces the east-northeast, an orientation common to Irish ringforts and possibly connected to practical or symbolic preferences for the sunrise direction.
