A ringfort, or rath, is a roughly circular enclosure defined by an earthen bank and ditch, built during the early medieval period as a farmstead and the basic unit of rural life in Ireland for centuries. This particular example measures approximately 26 metres across, but its defining bank has been worn down to almost nothing, visible only from the south and south-southeast, where it survives as little more than a scarp in the grass. The interior retains faint traces of cultivation ridges running from east-northeast to west-southwest, the kind of detail that suggests agricultural use long after the original enclosure fell out of use, but these too are subtle enough to be easily missed.

What makes the site quietly melancholy is that it appears to have been actively levelled at some point after fieldwork was first carried out on it. Aerial photography taken in November 2011 showed no surface remains of the monument at all, suggesting that whatever was still standing at the time of the original inspection had since been removed or graded flat. A tree plantation pressing in from the east has further disrupted the ground. Two other ringforts survive nearby, one roughly 170 metres to the northwest and another about 180 metres to the north-northeast, which indicates this was once a landscape with a reasonable density of early medieval settlement. The Kilpatrick example, however, is now the most diminished of the three, a site that survives more in the archaeological record than in the ground itself.
