Ringfort (Rath), Kiltycahill, Co. Sligo

In a field of gently rolling pasture in County Sligo, the ground gives itself away only reluctantly.

A slightly raised circular platform, roughly 28 metres across, sits on a south-west-facing slope, its edges marked by an earthen and stone bank so low, at around 30 centimetres above the interior, that a passing walker might dismiss it as a trick of the terrain. This is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, the most common type of early medieval settlement monument in Ireland. Typically dating from roughly the fifth to the twelfth century, raths were enclosed farmsteads, their banks and ditches defining a domestic space rather than a military fortification, and thousands of them survive in various states across the Irish countryside.

At Kiltycahill, what survives is modest but legible. Around the outer base of the bank runs a fosse, a defensive or boundary ditch, here about 3.75 metres wide and originally around 30 centimetres deep, though it has largely silted and filled over time, with only faint traces remaining on the south-east to west-south-west arc. On the south-east to west portion of the circuit, the bank itself has disappeared entirely, and the enclosure is defined only by a low external scarp, a slight drop in ground level of around 20 centimetres. Where the original entrance once stood is no longer apparent. A concrete causeway, 2.4 metres wide and clearly of modern construction, now crosses the fosse on the western side, a practical agricultural addition that says something about how these monuments continue to sit inside working farmland, absorbed into daily use rather than set apart from it.
