Ringforts
In the townland of Knock in County Clare, a rath sits quietly in the landscape, its circular earthworks a remnant of early medieval Ireland that most people drive past without a second glance.
A rath, or ringfort, is an enclosed farmstead, typically defined by one or more banks and ditches thrown up in a ring, and they were built in their thousands across Ireland between roughly the sixth and tenth centuries. Clare alone contains hundreds of them, yet each one marks the spot where a family once lived, farmed, and managed cattle within a defended perimeter, and this particular example at Knock is one more piece of that overlooked everyday geography.
