Ringfort (Rath), Knockane, Co. Limerick

There is a particular melancholy to monuments that survive only on maps.

At Knockane in County Limerick, a ringfort once stood as a quiet feature of the rural landscape, its circular earthen bank enclosing a space of roughly forty metres across. Today, no trace of it remains above ground. In its place stands a farmyard, and the monument exists now only as a ghost, preserved in ink on paper rather than in soil and stone.

Ringforts, known in Irish as raths, were the most common form of early medieval settlement in Ireland, typically consisting of a raised circular bank of earth enclosing a domestic area where a family and their livestock would have lived, probably between the sixth and tenth centuries. They number in the tens of thousands across the island, though many have been lost to exactly the kind of gradual agricultural absorption that appears to have claimed the Knockane example. The monument at this location was recorded as an embanked circular enclosure on the 1924 Ordnance Survey six-inch map, which places its documentation firmly in the early twentieth century, though the structure itself would have dated from a very much earlier period. Denis Power, who compiled the record uploaded in August 2011, noted that by the time of that survey no evidence of the enclosure was evident on the ground, the area having been given over to farmyard use.

For those interested in visiting the general area around Knockane, it is worth going with measured expectations. There is nothing to see of the ringfort itself, and the farmyard that occupies the site is private land. The value of knowing about a site like this lies less in any physical encounter and more in the act of looking at a working landscape and understanding what lies beneath it, or what once did. The 1924 OS six-inch mapping series, much of which has been digitised and made freely accessible online through historical map viewers, can offer a useful before-and-after comparison for anyone curious about what the area once looked like. Such maps regularly reveal a countryside far more densely layered with early medieval activity than the present fields suggest.
