Ringfort (Rath), Knockburrane, Co. Kerry

Some ancient sites are remarkable for what they contain.

The ringfort at Knockburrane in north County Kerry is remarkable for what it no longer is. A rath, as these earthwork enclosures are known in Irish, was typically a circular or near-circular bank and ditch surrounding a farmstead, built and occupied from roughly the early medieval period onward. Thousands survive across Ireland in varying states of completeness. This one does not survive at all.

When the Ordnance Survey mapped the area in 1841 to 1842, the sub-circular enclosure was still visible enough to be recorded, though already compromised. A fieldbank running northwest to southeast had cut through its southern to western side, the slow logic of agricultural reorganisation quietly overwriting an older boundary. By the time the surveyors returned to update the map in 1914 to 1915, the feature had vanished from the record entirely, and nothing remains on the ground today. The gap between those two surveys represents the window in which the rath was effectively erased, absorbed into the field system around it.

What makes Knockburrane worth noting is precisely this completeness of loss. The 1841 map becomes, in effect, the only surviving document of the site's existence, a moment caught between partial survival and total obliteration. The fieldbank that encroached on it was not the act of any particular vandalism, just the ordinary accumulation of land use over time, which is how most things disappear.
