At Knockea in County Limerick, a ringfort once occupied a gently east-facing pasture slope, its circular earthen bank enclosing an area of roughly 40 metres in diameter. By the time anyone came to record it properly, it was already gone, levelled so completely that no trace was visible on inspection.

Ringforts, known in Irish as raths, were the most common form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically consisting of a circular area enclosed by one or more earthen banks and ditches, used to protect a farmstead and its livestock. This particular example at Knockea was captured, at least in outline, on the Ordnance Survey map of 1841, which recorded it as a circular enclosure. That map entry is now, in effect, the monument's only surviving form. When Denis Power compiled the site record, uploaded in May 2013, the inspection found the land had been worked over to the point where the earthwork had entirely disappeared into the surrounding pasture.

For anyone visiting the area, there is no marker, no interpretive panel, and nothing to distinguish this field from any other on the slope. The value in knowing about a site like this lies less in what can be seen and more in what the 1841 OS map reveals: that this landscape was once dotted with structures that shaped how people lived for centuries, many of which have since been ploughed, grazed, or quietly erased. The map itself, accessible through the Irish Ordnance Survey's historical mapping archives, remains the clearest way to locate where the enclosure once stood and to appreciate how much has been lost from the archaeological record of rural Limerick.
