At Knockeen in County Kerry, somewhere in the fields and folds of that well-layered landscape, there sits a rath, the circular earthwork enclosure that was once the most common form of defended farmstead in early medieval Ireland.
Tens of thousands of these structures were built across the country between roughly the fifth and twelfth centuries, each one typically consisting of a raised circular bank of earth, sometimes reinforced with stone, enclosing a domestic space where a family and their livestock would have sheltered. Kerry has more than its share of them, and the one at Knockeen is among the quieter entries in the county's archaeological catalogue.
