Ringfort (Rath), Knockeen, Co. Limerick

On a west-facing slope in County Limerick, a roughly circular earthwork sits enclosed by not one but two concentric earthen banks, a feature that sets it apart from the more common single-banked ringforts scattered across the Irish countryside.

Ringforts, known in Irish as raths, were typically enclosed farmsteads of the early medieval period, their banks and ditches defining a domestic boundary rather than a military one. The presence of a double bank here hints at either elevated status for whoever once lived within, or a particular need for additional protection, though whether that need was social or practical is something the ground itself no longer makes clear.

The site at Knockeen was recorded on the 1923 Ordnance Survey six-inch map as a roughly circular enclosure measuring approximately thirty metres in diameter, a modest footprint that would have been typical for a single farming household. The record was compiled by Denis Power and uploaded in June 2013 as part of an ongoing effort to document such monuments before time, land use, or vegetation render them harder to read. At the point of inspection, the monument could not be examined directly because dense scrub had grown up around and over it, a common fate for earthworks on marginal ground that has slipped out of active grazing.

The site occupies rolling pasture with open views to the west and north, which may explain why someone chose the location in the first place; a commanding sightline was often as important as fertile ground when selecting a homestead in early medieval Ireland. Visitors should be aware that the scrub recorded at the time of inspection may not have thinned, and access to the monument itself is likely still obstructed. The enclosure is not signposted, and its low earthen banks may be difficult to distinguish from field boundaries or natural undulations even when not screened by vegetation. The 1923 OS map remains the clearest documentary guide to its approximate position on the hillside.
