Ringfort (Rath), Knockerry, Co. Clare

In the townland of Knockerry in County Clare, a rath sits in the landscape, its earthen banks tracing the outline of a life lived perhaps fifteen hundred years ago.

A rath, or ringfort, is an enclosed farmstead of the early medieval period, typically circular, defined by one or more banks and ditches of earth. Tens of thousands of them survive across Ireland, and yet each one represents a household, a family, a decision about where to settle and how to defend it. This one, in the quiet terrain of County Clare, is among the many that endure largely unannounced.
