Ringforts
At Knockmael in County Clare, somewhere in the quietly complex landscape of the Burren's eastern margins, there sits a ringfort, locally known by the Irish term rath.
That a circular earthwork enclosure used as a farmstead and home during the early medieval period, typically between the fifth and twelfth centuries, should survive into the present is not itself unusual. Ireland has tens of thousands of them. What is more quietly striking is how little is formally recorded about this particular one, which exists in the archaeological register as little more than a name and a map reference, its details still pending.
