Ringfort (Rath), Knockmore, Co. Clare

At Knockmore in County Clare, somewhere beneath the ordinary rhythms of the landscape, lies a ringfort, known in Irish as a rath.

These circular enclosures, typically defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, were the dominant form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, used from roughly the fifth to the twelfth century as farmsteads and defended homesteads for families of varying social rank. Thousands survive across the country in varying states of preservation, yet each one occupies a specific place in the local terrain for specific reasons, usually chosen for drainage, visibility, or proximity to good land.

The ringfort at Knockmore is one of those sites where the record, for now, runs thin. What can be said is that its classification as a rath places it within that broad category of earthwork enclosures rather than the stone-built variant known as a cashel, which is more typical of the rocky ground found elsewhere in Clare, particularly the Burren. Knockmore itself sits in a county shaped by two very different geologies, and the presence of an earthen rath suggests ground that could support the digging of banks and the turning of soil. Beyond that, the site remains, at least in the publicly available record, a name on a map and a shape in the earth, waiting for fuller documentation.
