Ringfort (Rath), Laghtmacdurkan, Co. Mayo

In a pasture field in Laghtmacdurkan, County Mayo, a raised oval mound sits quietly on a natural rise, its earthen bank still standing up to 2.6 metres on its south-western side.

This is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, the most common monument type in the Irish countryside. Ringforts were typically enclosed farmsteads of the early medieval period, their earthen or stone banks defining a space for a household and its animals. What makes this example quietly interesting is not just its own preservation, but the company it keeps: two further raths lie within 275 metres of it, one to the north-north-west and another to the south, suggesting that this corner of Mayo was once a reasonably busy agricultural landscape, with neighbouring enclosed settlements within easy walking distance of one another.

The rath itself is an oval measuring roughly 27 metres on its north-west to south-east axis and 18 metres across the other way. The bank, or scarp, is particularly pronounced on the south-west and west, where the natural fall of the ground amplifies what is already a relatively vertical external face. The entrance gap, about 2 metres wide, sits at the east-north-east and was positioned to face the most gently sloping approach to the rise, a practical choice that would have made daily movement in and out considerably easier. The interior is level and grassy, and the top of the scarp is lined with hawthorn, blackthorn, and ash, the kind of scrubby boundary planting often associated with older earthworks in Ireland. An old quarry pit has eaten slightly into the eastern edge of the bank, and a modern house sits immediately to the south-east. The Gweestion River runs about 160 metres to the south, close enough to have made the site an attractive one for early farmers seeking water without being exposed to flooding on the rise itself.
