Ringfort (Rath), Larass, Co. Sligo

In the townland of Larass in County Sligo, a rath sits in the landscape, its circular earthen bank still holding the outline of a life organised around enclosure and defence.

Raths, also known as ringforts, are among the most common archaeological monuments in Ireland, yet each one carries its own particular silence. They were typically built between the sixth and tenth centuries, serving as farmsteads for early medieval families who raised the banks as much for status and the corralling of livestock as for any serious military purpose. There are an estimated 45,000 or so across the island, yet the majority pass unremarked, folded into field boundaries or half-swallowed by scrub.

The Larass example is recorded as a rath, the Gaelic term for this class of earthwork enclosure, distinguished from a cashel, which would have used stone rather than earth and turf for its surrounding wall. Beyond its classification and location in this quiet corner of Sligo, the detailed record for this particular site has not yet been made publicly available, which means the specifics of its dimensions, condition, and any associated finds remain out of reach for the moment. Sligo itself is a county with a remarkable density of prehistoric and early medieval monuments, from the megalithic tombs of the Carrowmore complex to the passage cairn on Knocknarea, and a rath at Larass fits into a long continuum of human settlement across this part of Connacht.
