Ringfort (Rath), Larkinstown, Co. Westmeath

Some archaeological sites are remarkable for what survives.

This one is remarkable for what does not. A ringfort that once occupied the western face of a prominent ridge in Larkinstown, County Westmeath, commanding wide views over hilly grassland to the south, west, and north, has been so thoroughly levelled that by November 2011 it had effectively disappeared from the landscape. It never even made it onto an edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch maps, meaning its existence went largely unrecorded until aerial photography caught it from above.

Ringforts, known in Irish as raths, were typically enclosed farmsteads of the early medieval period, defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches. The Larkinstown example was on the modest side, roughly 23 metres in diameter, and even when it was recorded on the ground in 1984 it was already faint. Surveyors described a sub-circular area defined not by any surviving bank but by a scarp, a low step in the ground surface, and a shallow external fosse, that is, a ditch running around the outside. The fosse itself was only partially visible, traceable from the north-northwest to north-northeast and again from the southeast to south-southwest. Inside, the ground sloped from northeast to southwest, and a shallow depression in the southwest quadrant suggested earlier disturbance. A field fence cut across the eastern side. What preserved the record at all was a Cambridge University aerial photograph taken in 1966, catalogue reference CUCAP APE034, in which the cropmark or earthwork was still legible from the air. By the time a Digital Globe image was taken some four decades later, nothing remained to be seen. A quarry access road, following the line of what had been a field boundary, now runs roughly 20 metres to the west, marking the edge of the neighbouring townland of Down.
