Ringfort (Rath), Leansaghane, Co. Kerry

The name tells you what was once obvious: Lisglass, or Lios Glas in Irish, means the green ringfort.

Somewhere in the translation from living monument to field boundary, most of it disappeared. What survives at Leansaghane in north County Kerry is a raised area just one metre high, the last legible remnant of an enclosure that once measured roughly 35 metres across at its widest east-to-west point. Ringforts, known in Irish as raths or lios, were the predominant form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically consisting of a circular earthen bank enclosing a farmstead. This one, a univallate example, meaning it had a single enclosing bank rather than two or three concentric ones, now sits wedged into the corner of a field, more absorbed by the agricultural landscape than preserved within it.

The distortion of the site is quietly instructive about how these monuments are lost. A fieldbank cuts through the circuit from the north-west, continuing round through north to east, and on the north-eastern arc there is no surface trace at all. A further 19 metres along the southern side show considerable distortion. The result is that the monument has been cannibalised by the very land divisions that may have been built, in part, from its own material. C. Toal's North Kerry Archaeological Survey, published in 1995, recorded the site as it then stood, and the picture it paints is of a rath that has been quietly losing ground for a long time.
