Ringfort (Rath), Lecarrow, Co. Mayo

A ringfort, or rath, is an enclosed farmstead of the early medieval period, typically defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches.

This particular example in Lecarrow, County Mayo, sits on a slight rise in improved pasture, making it subtly conspicuous in a landscape that otherwise tends toward wet, boggy ground. What gives it a quiet strangeness is less its size than its condition: it is an oval earthen platform, roughly 21 metres across its longer axis, that has been grazed, eroded, and slowly absorbed back into the field around it, yet still reads clearly as a deliberate human construction.

The site survives as a low platform defined by a scarp, a step-like edge, that measures less than a metre wide at its widest points. At certain sections this scarp incorporates large stones, possibly the remains of an original stone facing that once gave the bank a more formal appearance. On the north-east to south-east side, the scarp descends to a terrace about five metres wide before dropping again at its outer edge, suggesting a more complex original profile than what survives today. To the west, a shallow depression outside the scarp may be the remnant of a fosse, the ditch that would typically have accompanied an earthen bank. The most likely position of the original entrance is on the east side, where there is a low slump in the scarp consistent with a gap that has been worn down over centuries. Inside, a low spine running east to west gives the interior a gently domed profile, sloping more noticeably toward the south, where the bank edge has merged almost imperceptibly with the natural ground. The rath is ringed by hawthorn, a tree long associated with such enclosures in Irish tradition, and its interior is grassy and scattered with a handful of hawthorn trees. Cattle have eroded several breaks in the scarp. A second possible rath lies approximately 215 metres to the north, a reminder that these sites frequently occur in loose clusters across the Irish countryside.
