The site is not ruined, not overgrown, not waiting to be uncovered. It is simply gone, leaving behind nothing but its outline on two nineteenth-century maps and a notation confirming its absence.

A ringfort, or rath, is one of the most common monument types in the Irish landscape: a roughly circular enclosure defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, typically dating from the early medieval period and used as a farmstead or place of enclosure for livestock. Thousands survive across the country in various states of preservation. The Liscullane example was recorded as a circular enclosure on the Ordnance Survey map of 1841 to 1842, clear enough at that point to be mapped with confidence. By the time the 1916 edition was produced, it had become barely perceptible, and a trackway running in a north-west to south-east direction had been cut directly through it. Whatever earthworks remained at that stage were evidently slight enough to be crossed without ceremony. C. Toal's North Kerry Archaeological Survey, published in 1995, confirmed what the maps had begun to suggest: no trace survives today.

The speed of that disappearance is worth pausing on. Between the mid-nineteenth century and the early twentieth, a monument that had endured for perhaps a thousand years was reduced to near-invisibility, then to nothing. Agricultural improvement, land clearance, and the casual routing of a farm track were likely enough to finish it. The Liscullane rath now belongs to a category of monuments that archaeology can only gesture towards: known to have existed, impossible to visit, preserved in the archive rather than in the earth.
