Ringfort (Rath), Lismakeery, Co. Limerick

There is something quietly unsettling about a site whose most informative feature is its own absence.

In rough pasture on a gentle east-facing slope in Lismakeery, County Limerick, there once stood a rath, a type of earthen ringfort consisting of a circular embanked enclosure that served as a farmstead and place of enclosure during the early medieval period in Ireland. It measured approximately thirty metres in diameter. Today, there is nothing to see.

The site was recorded on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1841, where it appears as a clearly defined embanked circular enclosure, the kind of monument that was still common enough across the Irish landscape at that point in the nineteenth century to be mapped with routine matter-of-factness. By the time field investigator Denis Power inspected the location, the monument had been levelled entirely. His notes, compiled and uploaded in August 2011, are blunt on the matter: no trace of the monument was evident when inspected. What caused the levelling is not recorded. Agricultural improvement, land drainage, decades of ploughing, or simple neglect of the earthworks could all account for it, and such losses are not unusual across lowland Limerick, where raths once numbered in the thousands.

For anyone interested in visiting, the site sits in rough pasture and there is, by definition, nothing to observe on the ground. What makes it worth knowing about, however, is precisely that quality of erasure. The 1841 OS six-inch map series, freely available through the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies and other online archives, allows a visitor to overlay the historic cartography onto the modern landscape and see exactly where the enclosure once sat. Standing on a field that the map insists should contain something, and finding only grass, gives a particular kind of perspective on how much of the early medieval settlement pattern of Ireland has quietly disappeared from view within the last two centuries.
