There are thought to be roughly 50,000 ringforts scattered across the island, yet each one represents a farmstead, a family, a patch of early medieval life enclosed within an earthen bank or stone wall. A rath, as this type is known, typically consisted of a circular rampart enclosing a domestic space, built and occupied broadly between the sixth and tenth centuries, though some continued in use longer. They were not military fortifications in any grand sense, more a combination of working farm boundary and social statement, marking out territory and status in a world organised around cattle and kinship.

Lismeegaun itself is a small townland, and beyond its location in Mayo little specific detail about this particular rath is currently available in the public record. That absence is itself quietly telling. Mayo contains a considerable number of ringforts, many of them in areas that saw significant population loss during the nineteenth century and have never been subject to intensive modern survey. The earthworks of such sites can survive well in low-lying or marginal ground precisely because the land around them was never ploughed up or built over, the farming pressure that destroyed so many comparable monuments in more fertile counties.
