On a ridge in undulating grassland at Lismihill in County Galway, what was once a substantial circular enclosure, roughly fifty metres in diameter, has been quietly erased from the landscape. No earthwork, no bank, no ditch survives to catch the eye of a passing walker. The site is known only because nineteenth-century Ordnance Survey cartographers recorded it on their six-inch maps, where it appears as a near-circular form clipped at its eastern edge by a north-northwest to south-southeast field boundary, and at the south by an east-west running one. Those boundaries, drawn across the enclosure rather than around it, are likely part of the reason nothing visible remains.

The enclosure is believed to have been a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, a type of enclosed farmstead that was the standard form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, broadly from the fifth to the twelfth centuries. Raths were typically defined by one or more earthen banks and external ditches, enclosing a domestic space used for housing, livestock, and storage. They are extraordinarily common across the Irish countryside, with estimates running to tens of thousands of surviving examples, yet a great many others have been lost entirely to agriculture, land improvement, and the steady reworking of field systems over the centuries. The Lismihill site appears to be one of these losses. What the OS surveyors recorded as a legible circular form has since been absorbed into the working landscape, leaving only the cartographic trace as evidence that something was once there.
