Ringfort (Rath), Lissyviggeen, Co. Kerry

Some archaeological sites survive not in the ground but in the memory of the people who live beside them.

Near Lissyviggeen in County Kerry, a ringfort that was once large enough to be described as a big rath surrounded by a double fence has left no visible trace in the landscape whatsoever, yet the ground where it once stood is still left unploughed out of respect for what the family believes lies beneath.

A rath is a ringfort, the most common type of early medieval settlement in Ireland, typically consisting of a raised circular enclosure defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches. In the 1940s, a local account recorded this particular example as sitting roughly three hundred yards to the north-west of Lissyviggeen school, on the edge of the property belonging to the O'Keeffe family at Fort William House, a large two-storey building that still stands. The detail of a double fence suggests this was a substantial enclosure, possibly marking the homestead of a person of some local standing. By the time the account was set down, the physical remains had already disappeared, most likely lost to agricultural clearance at some earlier point.

What makes the site quietly compelling now is the gap between the archival description and the family's own understanding of where the rath actually stood. The written record places it near the edge of the house grounds, but the present owners maintain a tradition that it occupied the top of the ridge immediately to the north-east of the house, and they leave that area uncultivated accordingly. The two accounts do not necessarily contradict each other, but they do not quite align either, and that small discrepancy, preserved in the contrast between an old schoolchild's manuscript and a living family's habit of leaving a patch of ground alone, is its own kind of archaeological record.
