Ringfort (Rath), Listrisnan, Co. Mayo

On a ridge in County Mayo, where the ground tips away to a flat valley of wet pasture and a parallel ridge rises beyond, a roughly circular earthwork sits quietly in the grass.

It is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, the kind of enclosed farmstead that was common across Ireland during the early medieval period, roughly the fifth to the twelfth centuries. What makes this one worth pausing over is the way it occupies its landscape so deliberately, positioned at exactly the break of slope on the eastern side of the ridge, using the natural fall of ground as part of its own defences.

The enclosure measures about 35.5 metres north to south and 34 metres east to west, a slightly raised circular area defined partly by an earthen bank and partly by a substantial scarp, which is simply a steep natural or cut slope that here does much of the work the bank would otherwise do. The bank itself is rather low and has spread considerably with age, slumping especially on the western side, though in places it still rises to a narrow, almost triangular peak with stones protruding from the turf along its crest. A fosse, the ditch that would have run outside the enclosure to increase the height and difficulty of the barrier, is marked on Ordnance Survey maps from 1931 but is no longer clearly readable on the ground. A gap about three metres wide breaks the bank at the north, and a section of the scarp and interior at the south-east has been partially quarried away at some point, removing a semicircular bite from the edge of the site. Just outside the scarp to the east, a narrow terrace survives, its outer edge defined by a low scarp of its own; this may be the trace of an original outer enclosing element, or simply an old field boundary. A curving field fence at the south-west seems to preserve the arc of a further external fosse. A second rath lies just 130 metres to the south-south-east, suggesting this part of the ridge once carried a cluster of enclosed settlements rather than a single isolated farmstead.
