Conjoined raths of this kind are uncommon, and the pairing here gives the site an unusual geometry that sets it apart from the thousands of single-enclosure examples scattered across the Irish countryside.

A rath, in the most general terms, is an early medieval enclosed settlement, typically circular, defined by one or more banks of earth or stone and sometimes an outer ditch, known as a fosse. At Loughbown, the two enclosures are distinct in shape and dimension. The north-western rath is roughly subcircular, measuring approximately 22 metres north to south and 20.5 metres east to west, and its defining bank of earth and stone has been partially absorbed by a later field wall along its north-eastern and eastern sides. Inside this enclosure there is a cist burial grave, suggesting the site had significance beyond simple habitation. The south-eastern rath is noticeably larger and kidney-shaped in plan, stretching nearly 29.5 metres on its longest axis. It retains traces of an external fosse along its eastern and southern edges, and a two-metre-wide entrance causeway survives at the south-east, a feature that would have controlled access into the enclosure. A scatter of randomly placed boulders sits within this interior, their purpose or origin unrecorded. The site was noted by Egan in 1960, though it is described as poorly preserved, with later agricultural activity having obscured much of the original fabric.
