Ringfort (Rath), Lowpark, Co. Mayo

What looks, at first glance, like a slight unevenness in a Mayo pasture turns out to be the ghost of an early medieval farmstead, its original form so gently eroded that the enclosure now reads more as a shallow saucer pressed into the earth than the purposeful ring of earthworks it once was.

A rath, the most common type of ringfort found across Ireland, was typically a circular area enclosed by one or more banks and ditches, serving as a defended farmstead for a family of some status during the early medieval period. Here at Lowpark, the bank survives only as a low, partly levelled rim, rising no more than 0.7 metres on its western side, its exterior scarp long since slumped outward into a gradual slope rather than a defined face.

The site measures roughly 29 metres on its northeast to southwest axis and 26 metres northwest to southeast, placing it at the smaller end of the rath spectrum. On the southwestern arc, a shallow depression between 3.5 and 4 metres wide is likely the remnant of a fosse, the external ditch that would originally have reinforced the bank; the depression does not continue around the rest of the circuit, either lost to centuries of agricultural activity or never completed. A gap of similar width at the southeast may preserve the line of the original entrance. What gives the site its particular character now is the vegetation that has colonised it: brambles sprawl across the western interior, while hawthorn and ash have taken root along the perimeter, a pattern that often marks out old earthworks in Irish farmland long after their profile has been all but flattened. A heap of field clearance stones sits at the eastern end of the fosse arc, a reminder that the surrounding land has been worked continuously across many generations. A second rath survives just 190 metres to the northeast, suggesting this corner of Lowpark was once a settled and reasonably populated landscape.
