Ringfort (Rath), Masmore, Co. Galway

On a north-facing slope of pastureland in Masmore, County Galway, there is a ringfort that has almost entirely ceased to exist in any visible sense, yet continues to appear on maps.

The Ordnance Survey six-inch sheets record it as a circular enclosure roughly 45 metres in diameter, and local knowledge holds that it was once a single-banked rath, the most common form of early medieval enclosure in Ireland, typically consisting of an earthen bank and external ditch surrounding a farmstead or homestead. Today, none of that bank survives above ground. What remains is something far more subtle: a faint change in the vegetation, a band of slightly different growth that traces the ghost of the monument's outline across the grass.

Ringforts of this kind were built and occupied primarily between the sixth and tenth centuries, and thousands of them once dotted the Irish landscape. Many were levelled by centuries of farming, and the Masmore example appears to belong to that category. What is quietly notable here is its setting and its company. The enclosure sits on a slope overlooking a stream to the north, a location typical of such sites, whose builders often favoured gently elevated ground near water. Approximately 140 metres to the northwest lies a second ringfort, suggesting that this corner of North Galway once held a small cluster of contemporary or near-contemporary settlement, a pattern that archaeologists recognise across many Irish townlands where land was productive and water accessible.

For anyone who makes their way here, the experience is one of knowing what to look for rather than seeing something obvious. The vegetation band is the sole physical clue that anything once stood on this ground, and it is the kind of detail that rewards patience and a good eye for subtle changes in a field.
