Ringfort (Rath), Monavaha, Co. Limerick

At Monavaha in County Limerick, a dwelling house, a cluster of sheds, and a garden occupy what was once an early medieval ringfort.

The circular earthwork that stood here for centuries has been levelled entirely, absorbed into the ordinary fabric of a rural property without so much as a commemorative stone to mark what it was. It is the kind of erasure that happened quietly, incrementally, across the Irish countryside, and it would be easy to pass the site without any sense that something older lay beneath.

A ringfort, sometimes called a rath, was a roughly circular enclosure defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, used as a farmstead during the early medieval period, broadly from around the fifth to the twelfth century. Thousands survive across Ireland, but many more have been lost to agriculture and development. The Monavaha example was recorded on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1841, where it appears as an embanked circular enclosure with a diameter of approximately thirty metres, sitting on a gentle slope facing east-south-east. That map record is now among the few pieces of evidence that the monument existed at all. The site was compiled and assessed by Denis Power, with the record uploaded in August 2011.

What makes a visit here worth considering is not the ringfort itself, which is gone, but the single physical remnant that may survive. A slightly curved earth-and-stone bank, measuring around 1.15 metres in height, two metres in width, and running approximately 30.5 metres in length, forms the northern boundary of the property. Surveyors noted that this bank may be part of the original enclosing element, or may overlie it. Whether it is genuinely prehistoric in origin or simply a later field boundary that happens to follow the old line is difficult to say without excavation. For anyone interested in how ringforts disappear into the landscape, that ambiguous curve of earth is quietly instructive.
