This is a rath, the most common type of early medieval enclosure in Ireland, typically built as a farmstead between roughly the fifth and twelfth centuries. The defining features are all here: an earthen bank, a fosse (a shallow external ditch dug to provide the material for the bank), and a single narrow entrance, in this case just 1.2 metres wide, with a causeway preserved across the fosse on the eastern side.

The enclosure measures approximately 31 metres across on its north-west to south-east axis and 26 metres on the north-east to south-west axis, making it a modestly sized but well-defined example of the form. The bank and fosse are best preserved along the eastern, southern, and western arc, though both remain traceable all the way round. The interior slopes gently to the south-east, and faint traces of cultivation ridges run roughly north-north-west to south-south-east across it, suggesting that the enclosed space was put to agricultural use at some point after the ringfort itself had ceased to function as a settlement. The site sits on a rise that would once have offered a degree of visibility over the surrounding terrain, though the gently undulating grassland around it now limits long views. Two other recorded monuments lie within easy distance: another ringfort some 220 metres to the north-west, and an earthwork around 200 metres to the north-east, suggesting this corner of Westmeath preserves a cluster of early activity that the modern landscape gives little reason to expect.
