That curve is not accidental; it traces the outline of a rath, a type of ringfort that served as an enclosed farmstead during the early medieval period in Ireland, and the fence has simply absorbed the monument's boundary into its own line rather than cutting across it.

The rath sits on a northwest to southeast ridge with the ground falling steeply away for 160 metres to the southwest, down to the shore of Mannin Lake. Its central platform is broadly oval, measuring roughly 31.5 metres north to south and 35.6 metres east to west. Whoever built it had to compensate for the natural slope of the ground, so the western half of the platform was deliberately built up to keep the interior relatively level. Around this raised area runs a fosse, a defensive or boundary ditch, still visible as a shallow depression in the pasture. Beyond the fosse, an external bank of earth and stone survives in varying states. At the south through to the northwest it remains a low, dilapidated ridge. Towards the north-northeast it flattens to little more than a surface undulation, and at the south-southeast it is barely perceptible at all. The section running from the east-northeast to the southeast, where the field fence now runs, is the most legibly preserved precisely because a later boundary happened to follow the same line. Hawthorn bushes grow around the perimeter, a planting pattern common to old enclosures across Ireland, where such scrub often signals the presence of a buried or degraded earthwork beneath otherwise unremarkable grazing land.
