That detail alone sets this site apart from the usual catalogue of Irish early medieval earthworks. A rath, to use the Irish term, is a roughly circular enclosure defined by one or more earthen banks, typically dating from the early medieval period and originally associated with a farmstead or settlement. This one, around thirty metres in diameter, has long since blurred into the surrounding landscape.

The enclosure is poorly preserved and overgrown, its defining bank partially obscured by a later field wall built directly on top of it, which is itself a small piece of agricultural history layered onto an older one. The classification carries a degree of uncertainty; it is listed only as possibly a rath, meaning the earthwork retains enough of its form to suggest an early medieval origin, but not enough to confirm it with confidence. What was once a boundary marking the edge of someone's domestic world has been incrementally absorbed, first by a later farmer's drystone wall, and then by whoever decided the sheltered interior made reasonable growing ground.

The site sits in open grassland with views west towards Corranroo Bay, part of the broader network of inlets along the south Galway coast. There is nothing especially dramatic about its setting, which is perhaps why it has survived in this quietly repurposed state rather than attracting the attention that might have led to its clearance or consolidation. The vegetable garden inside the ancient bank is, in its own way, a continuation of the same logic that originally prompted someone to build here.
