Ringfort (Rath), Mulderricksfield, Co. Limerick

The most telling thing about this ringfort in Mulderricksfield is how little of it remains.

A ringfort, or rath, is a roughly circular enclosure defined by one or more earthen banks, built during the early medieval period as a defended farmstead, and at its peak this one measured around twenty metres across. Today, almost all of it has been levelled into the surrounding ground, leaving only a single curving arc of earth-and-stone bank to suggest that anything was ever here at all.

The 1841 Ordnance Survey six-inch map recorded the monument clearly, depicting it as an embanked circular enclosure, which tells us that it was still largely intact as recently as the mid-nineteenth century. At some point after that survey was completed, the structure was substantially destroyed, most likely through agricultural clearance. What survives runs from the north-west to the north-east of the original circuit, a remnant arc roughly eighteen metres long, standing no more than sixty-five centimetres high and little over a metre wide. Denis Power compiled the record of what remained, uploaded to the national monuments database in August 2011, by which point the site sat in a low-lying, level area that had recently been planted with coniferous trees.

Visitors approaching the site will find a landscape that has changed considerably since even the 2011 survey, given the growth rate of conifer plantations. The tall rough grass noted at the time of recording is likely now overshadowed by the maturing trees, which can make low earthworks harder to read in the field. The surviving bank is subtle enough that it rewards patience and a slow pace rather than a quick sweep of the eye. The north-western to north-eastern orientation of the arc is a useful anchor point when trying to orient yourself within what was once the enclosure's perimeter. There is no formal access or signage, and the surrounding plantation means the ground underfoot may be uneven.
