Ringfort (Rath), Mullenmadoge, Co. Mayo

On a ridge in Mullenmadoge, Co. Mayo, there is almost nothing left to see, and yet the ground itself quietly disagrees.

A sub-circular area measuring roughly 39 metres north to south and 37 metres east to west can still be discerned at ground level, the faintest impression of what was once an oval earthen enclosure. This is, or was, a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, the type of enclosed farmstead that tens of thousands of early medieval families built across Ireland, typically from around the sixth to the twelfth centuries. The earthen bank that once ringed this one is gone entirely, but the shape of the place persists.

The 1837 Ordnance Survey six-inch map recorded it as an intact oval, embanked enclosure sitting atop the ridge with the Sonnagh River curving roughly 80 metres to the south. By the time the 1919 edition was surveyed, the eastern half had already been levelled, leaving only a semi-circular form about 35 metres across. Sometime after that, the remainder followed. The site commands a wide prospect over the surrounding landscape, with views south and north-east along the river's course and westward over a flat expanse of bog, which likely made it an attractive position in the first place. There is also a possible souterrain within the interior, a souterrain being an underground stone-lined passage or chamber, often used for storage or refuge, that frequently accompanies ringforts of this type. That feature was noted from local information passed on by M. Ruane in 1991, and its precise nature remains unconfirmed.

The site sits in pasture on the ridge, and because the enclosure has been fully levelled, the outline is subtle enough that it can be easy to miss without knowing exactly where to look. The relationship between the ridge, the river below, and the open bogland to the west gives a clearer sense of why someone chose this spot than any above-ground remains now can.
