Ringfort (Rath), Newtown, Co. Galway

Beneath the rubble and scrub of a County Galway hillside, a souterrain runs beneath the remains of an early medieval farmstead that most people walking the surrounding pastureland would never notice.

The rath at Newtown sits on a north-east-facing slope of a ridge, and its survival is partial at best, the kind of site that rewards close attention rather than a casual glance.

A rath is a ringfort, the most common archaeological monument type in Ireland, typically a circular or subcircular enclosure defined by an earthen bank and an outer ditch, known as a fosse, used as a defended farmstead during the early medieval period, roughly the fifth to twelfth centuries. This example measures approximately 40.8 metres east to west and 34.5 metres north to south, placing it within the middle range of such enclosures. The bank survives most clearly along the western to northern to eastern arc, while elsewhere the enclosing element has reduced to little more than a slight scarp in the ground. The fosse is traceable around much of the circuit but disappears at the south, and at the north it has been filled in with field-clearance rubble and colonised by trees. A field wall, built at some later point by farmers working the land, cuts directly through the monument from the south-south-west to the east, the kind of pragmatic intervention that has altered countless such sites across the Irish countryside. Most intriguing is the associated souterrain, an underground stone-lined passage or chamber of the sort often built in connection with raths, likely used for storage or refuge, which lies beneath or adjacent to the enclosure and suggests the site was once a functioning, inhabited place rather than a purely symbolic boundary.
